In a month full of excellent events and fantastically talented authors and artists, it’s only fitting that we end it with a bang! Join us as we welcome award-winners and nominees for some of the most prestigious awards in children’s literature at this year’s annual…  

It is with great pleasure that on Sunday, March 30th, Books of Wonder invites you and your young book lovers to come meet and hear from the authors and artists who have been received recognition from and awarded some of the most prestigious awards in children’s literature: The Randolph Caldecott Medal for “the most distinguished American picture book of the year” and the Theodore Seuss Geisel Award for “the most distinguished American book for beginning readers.” Joining us beginning at 1pm are Caldecott Medalist BRIAN FLOCA as he sounds the all aboard whistle with this year’s Caldecott Medal winning title, Locomotive; three-time Caldecott Medalist DAVID WIESNER introduces his latest Caldecott Honor book, Mr. Wuffles; and debut picture book author and illustrator AARON BECKER takes us for a ride with his Caldecott Honor book, Journey. Also joining us will be debut picture book creator GREG PIZZOLI as he takes a bite with this year’s Theodore Seuss Geisel Award winning The Watermelon Seed; and debut picture book author and artist MARY SULLIVAN who will give us a bounce with her Theodore Seuss Geisel Honor book, Ball; Young and old alike, this is an afternoon you will simply not want to miss. Join us as these authors and artists share their acclaimed titles, answer questions from fans, and sign copies of all their amazing, award-winning books! All Ages. 5 Award Winning Artists Answer the Question, What’s your favorite animal?

What’s your favorite animal? That’s the question legendary author and illustrator Eric Carle asked 14 of today’s most notable picture book creators to answer for this wonderful book created to raise funds for and celebrate The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. Each artist described and illustrated their answer in a gorgeous two-page spread, all compiled into a beautiful new picture book! Be sure to join in the zoological fun on Saturday, February 22nd, as we welcome 5 of the award-winning contributors to share their favorite animals with your young book-lovers.

This fun-filled afternoon will surely have your young animal lovers howling and hooting with delight, and looking at animals with a new appreciation! Come meet five of the wonderful picture book creators who have contributed to What’s Your Favorite Animal? Beginning at 1pm, Caldecott Honor artist SUSAN JEFFERS hops into the saddle with her favorite animal (a horse); Caldecott Honor artist PETER MCCARTY hops along with his favorite animal (a bunny rabbit); Two-time Caldecott Medalist CHRIS RASCHKA takes it slow and steady with his favorite animal (a snail); Caldecott Honor artist PETER SIS takes us back to his childhood home in the Czech Republic for a swim with his favorite animal (a blue carp); and NY Times bestselling and award-winning picture book creator ROSEMARY WELLS tells us all about her favorite fuzzy animal (her dog). This star-studded event is a wonderful reason to spend an afternoon with your young ones at Books of Wonder! And proceeds from the sale of this wonderful title benefit The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art — one of our favorite museums! (It’s only a few hours away in Amherst, Massachusetts!) Beginning at 1pm, the artists will discuss their animals, answer questions from the audience, and sign copies of all their amazing books! All ages. Saturday, February 22nd, 1-3pm.

So get your coats on, get down to Books of Wonder, and join us as Caldecott Honor artist SUSAN JEFFERS counts down The Twelve Days of Christmas, her richly illustrated reimagining of the classic Christmas song; Caldecott Medalist JERRY PINKNEY sets hearts racing with The Tortise & the Hare, the classic Aesop fable set anew in America’s southwest and a perfect companion to his Caldecott Award-winning The Lion & the Mouse;  award-winning artist CHARLES SANTORE brings us his beautiful versions of two classics, Hans Christian Anderson’s The Little Mermaid and Beatrix Potter’s The Classic Tale of Peter Rabbit; and Caldecott Medalist URI SHULEVITZ takes us for a walk with a boy, his dog, and his grandfather as the sun comes down in Dusk, a companion to his Caldecott Honor Book, Snow. Join us as Caldecott Honor artist PETER BROWN introduces a very proper tiger who just wants to let his hair down with Mr. Tiger Goes Wild; author STEPHANIE CALMENSON and illustrator JENNIFER THERMES take us on a voyage to an island where the true beauty of nature can be appreciated but despite a young boys wishes There are No Moose on This Island; the super talented husband-and-wife duo of NY Times bestselling artist WENDELL MINOR & authorFLORENCE MINOR bring us If You Were a Panda Bear, a rhyming and richly illustrated introduction to all types of bears and their habits. Then WENDELL MINOR asks the audience How Big Will You Pumpkin Grow? as  he introduces his new book which takes a nod from pumpkin growing contests across the country and features some monster pumpkins with our national landmarks; two-time Caldecott Medalist CHRIS RASCHKA invites us to follow Daisy the dog on her next adventure with Daisy Gets Lost, a companion to his Caldecott Medal-winning A Ball for Daisy, as Daisy faces her fears when she gets lost after chasing a squirrel to a new part of the park; and award-winning author and illustrator JEANETTE WINTER paints a picture with Henri’s Scissors, the little known story of the magnificent paper cutouts created by artist Henri Matisse in his later years. Meet Caldecott Medalists David Wiesner & Jerry Pinkney Tonight!

Tonight the stars align at Books of Wonder and picture book lovers are in for an evening of out of this world fun at a fabled Books of Wonder launch event. Beginning at 5pm, Caledcott Medalists DAVID WIESNER & JERRY PINKNEY take the stage and picture book lovers are in for a first encounter with their two new books. First three-time Caldecott Medalist DAVID WIESNER introduces Mr. Wuffles, the near wordless story of a rather picky feline and the odd contents of it’s favorite new toy. As Mr. Wuffles paws at his toy space ship which unassumingly blends in with all his other toys, he has little clue that the little green beings within are not having nearly as much fun! Then Caldecott Medalist and five-time Caldecott Honor artist JERRY PINKNEY sounds the start on The Tortise & the Hare, the classic Aesop fable set anew in America’s southwest which brings this storied race to vivid life and makes a fitting companion to his Caldecott Award-winning The Lion & the Mouse.
