Neighborhood Sharks Launch Party with Artist & Debut Author KATHERINE ROY!
This Tuesday evening, get ready for a launch party with plenty of bite! Animal lovers, picture book enthusiasts, and admirers of breathtaking illustrations will not want to miss the launch of author and illustrator KATHERINE ROY's…
Get ready to get up close and personal with the ocean’s most fearsome and famous predators and the scientists who study them — just miles from the Golden Gate Bridge! 26 miles away from San Francisco lives a population of the ocean’s largest and most famous predators. Each fall, while the city’s inhabitants dine on steaks, salads, and sandwiches, the great white sharks return to California’s Farallon Islands to dine on their favorite meal: the seals that live on the island’s rocky coasts. Massive, fast, and perfectly adapted to hunting after 11 million years of evolution, the great whites are among the planet’s most fearsome, fascinating, and least understood animals. In the fall of 2012, author and illustrator KATHERINE ROY visited the Farallons with the scientists who study the islands’ shark population. She witnessed seal attacks, observed sharks being tagged in the wild, and got an up-close look at the dramatic Farallons, a wildlife refuge that is strictly off-limits to all but the scientists who work there. Neighborhood Sharks is an intimate portrait of the life cycle, biology, and habitat of the great white shark, based on the latest research and an up-close visit with these amazing animals. Please join us for the exciting launch of this thrilling and fascinating book — there will be shark cupcakes, a slideshow of Katherine’s research for Neighborhood Sharks, and a sneak peek at her next book. Beginning at 6pm, illustrator and first time author KATHERINE ROY shares her beautiful and captivating new book, answers questions from the audience, and signs copies of all her wonderful titles. Ages 6 and up. Tuesday, September 30th, 6-8pm.
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author Scott Westerfeld comes a smart, thought-provoking novel-within-a-novel that you won’t be able to put down.
Darcy Patel has put college on hold to publish her teen novel, Afterworlds. With a contract in hand, she arrives in New York City with no apartment, no friends, and all the wrong clothes. But lucky for Darcy, she’s taken under the wings of other seasoned and fledgling writers who help her navigate the city and the world of writing and publishing. Over the course of a year, Darcy finishes her book, faces critique, and falls in love.
Woven into Darcy’s personal story is her novel, Afterworlds, a suspenseful thriller about a teen who slips into the “Afterworld” to survive a terrorist attack. The Afterworld is a place between the living and the dead, and where many unsolved—and terrifying—stories need to be reconciled. Like Darcy, Lizzie too falls in love…until a new threat resurfaces, and her special gifts may not be enough to protect those she cares about most.
