Books of Wonder and Legends of Oz Dorthy's Return!
The month of May holds special significance for Oz fans worldwide. Not only does May 15th mark the 158th anniversary of L. Frank Baum’s birth, but May also marks the 114th anniversary of the publication of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
The best-selling children’s book of 1900, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was a whole new kind of uniquely American fantasy for children. Baum had never planned to write a sequel, but at the request of the hordes of children who wrote asking for more about Oz, he went on to publish another 13 Oz books expounding on the fantastic world he’d created. His final Oz book, Glinda of Oz, was published in 1920, a year after his death. But so popular had the tradition of an annual Oz book become, that his publisher sought out a new author to continue the Oz stories and the series continued to flourish till a total of 40 Oz books were issued.
75 years ago, The gates to Oz were again thrown open with the release of The Wizard of Oz, a 1939 American movie musical based on Baum’s first Oz book. Notable for its use of Technicolor, fantasy storytelling, musical score, and unusual characters this motion picture has become one of the most iconic in film history, having been viewed by well over a billion people.
While L. Frank Baum’s book published in 1900, and Metro-Goldwym-Mayer’s 1939 film are what people think of when they think of Oz, the permutations of Oz are seemingly endless with books, movies, plays, etc. Beginning with the hit 1903 Broadway musical of The Wizard of Oz to the 1926 silent film starring Oliver Hardy (of Laurel & Hardy fame) as the Tin Woodman, to Gregory McGuire’s best-selling novel Wicked and the smash Broadway musical it inspired, Oz has become an indelible part of American culture as generation after generation have grown up encountering this timeless tale in multiple forms.
On May 9th, Oz is back in theaters and fans new and old are invited to experience a 3D animated film with an all star cast inLegends of Oz: Dorthy’s Return. Based on the book Dorthy of Oz written L. Frank Baum’s grandson Roger S. Baum in 1989, and published by Books of Wonder with HarperCollins Publishers. In this adventure Dorthy returns to the Land of Oz only to find all her old friends the Scarecrow, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion — and the entire Land of Oz — in grave danger. With the help of some new friends, Dorthy must defeat the wicked Jester who seeks to take control of Oz by taking it’s most important residents captive and casting a pall of darkness over Oz.
Copies of Dorthy of Oz, the book that Legends of Oz: Dorthy’s Return is based on, are now available signed by the author Roger S. Baum, in the store and by clicking the book below.

There are some people that the world will never forget; people who remind us that one person can forever change the course of history. On Friday, March 21st, Books of Wonder will celebrate the memory of Indian independence leader Mahatma Gandhi, and American Civil Rights leader Malcolm X, as we welcome the authors of two new picture book biographies — who are direct descendants of these renowned leaders.
Join us as author ILYASAH SHABAZZ, the daughter of Malcolm X, presents her new biographical picture book about her father’s childhood, Malcolm Little: The Boy Who Grew Up to Become Malcolm X. In it, ILYASAH SHABAZZ offers a unique glimpse into the childhood of this charismatic leader, chronicling his journey to strength and self-reliance. Then author ARUN GANDHI, the grand-son of Mahatma Gandhi, along with co-author BETHANY HEGEDUS and illustrator EVAN TURK, will present a new non-fiction picture book, Grandfather Gandhi. In the book, ARUN GANDHI tells the remarkably personal story of how his grandfather taught him to channel his anger in a constructive way, using it to "turn the darkness into light." Join us for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, as the authors share with us their first-hand perspective on these larger-than-life historical figures. After the authors have presented their book, they will answer questions from the audience and then sign copies of their remarkable books. Ages 6-12. Friday, March 21st, 6-8pm.
